What is a Metal Photo Print?

A metal photo print is a decoration method that permanently applies a design to the surface of the metal using special ink. The metal surface is often pre-prepared so that the ink binds with it permanently.

This method produces vivid, high-contrast, and lifelike designs, all made possible by metal’s natural luster and sheen. The most common images printed on metal are photos or high-resolution designs made with software.

When is Printing On Metal Ideal?

Also, steer clear of printing on metal when you do not have the best tools for the method. Trying low-cost metal printing will leave you with poor results after taking you through a grueling, labor-intensive process.

Different Methods Used to Print on Metal

There are several different methods you can use to print on metal. Let’s explain each then go through the pros and cons to find out the best method for the most desirable and durable results.

Toner-Based Laser Printer

This method involves printing an image onto transfer paper by fusing a laser toner with it. A heat press is then used to imprint the design onto the metal. 

Acrylic Polyurethane with a Standard Inkjet Printer

In this method, you print the design on standard printing paper using a normal printer. Then, you apply a layer of acrylic polyurethane on the metal sheet before placing the print face-down on the metal. You let it sit for about an hour, then use a damp cloth to gently peel off the printed paper. You must be very patient when performing the last step to avoid damaging the design in the process.

Mod Podge

Similar to the previous method, you print the design on standard printing paper using a normal printer. Then, you replace the acrylic with Mod Podge before following all the same steps for the acrylic.

Sublimation Printing

Sublimation printing is a popular DIY method for printing on almost all materials, including metal. For best results, this method requires special sublimation ink, paper, and printers.

Sublimation printing on metal surfaces is the best and easiest option. The sublimation printer may be pricey, but it is an investment you won’t regret because you can use it for several other DIY projects. We therefore recommend it for long-lasting, vibrant, and versatile metal decorations.

What Do You Need to Print on Metal?

Although sublimation printing is fairly easy to do and provides excellent results, there are some things that you will need to have before embarking on a project. Here they are:

High Definition Photo Metal Panel

These sheets are easily found in DIY stores and of varying sizes. They are often made of aluminum with an adhesive on one side, which is covered by a translucent or transparent backing material. You do not need to prep the metal sheet in any way.

Sublimation Printer & Printing Paper

Sublimation printers are different from normal printers in that they use a special sublimation ink. If you use a normal printer with normal printing ink, then the process will not work as it’s supposed to because the ink will not sublimate and combine with the substrate.

Sublimation Heat Press

You can use any type of sublimation heat press that is suitable for the size of your design. Flatbed Heat Presses are the most common. Do not forget the heat-resistant tape to hold the print in place and parchment paper to aid even distribution of heat.

Protective Gloves

Since you will be working with very high temperatures, do not forget to stay safe from burns! Metal is a very good conductor of heat, so you must be extra careful. 

Protective Finish

Therefore, a protective polymer coating is added. This protective coating can also be used to create special finishes on the print, namely glossy, satin, and matte.

The glossy finish gives the design an extra shine, while the matte finish reduces the shine and produces soft, low contrast, understated tones, which may be more elegant depending on the setting. The satin finish is in the middle, offering the brightness of a glossy finish but with the muted qualities of a matte finish.

Once you have the photo you want to print on the metal sheet, collect all these items and follow the steps outlined below. Remember to adjust items based on size, preferred finish, etc as discussed. Let’s get started!

Step-by-Step Process of Printing on Metal (with Pictures)

Follow these steps for the best results when printing photos on metal using the sublimation printing method:

Step 1. Print Out the photo/image onto the sublimation paper

Open the image you want to print then click the ‘Print’ Button on your computer then click ‘Properties’.

Then, click on ‘Paper Type’ and select ‘DS Transfer Multi-Use/Rigid’ since you will be working on a metal surface.

Then click ‘Okay’ and you are ready to do the final print.

You can leave out a margin to help you see if the image is properly aligned. You will do this by checking to see if there’s any spillover around the metal sheet’s edges. Around 2 to 3 inches is enough.

Step 2. Peel off the plastic covering of the photo metal panel

Gently peel off the metal sheet covering the adhesive on the photo metal panel, making sure you do not touch the sticky surface by pulling the tap towards you at all times.

Step 3. Gently place the panel onto the printed-out photo with the sticky side facing down

Step 4. Attach the print to the metal sheet using heat-resistant tape

Once you have ensured that there are no air bubbles, secure the print onto the sheet with heat-resistant tape. Use as much as you like. Here the instructor has used 8 points to secure the print.

Step 5. Place the print and metal sheet in the heat press

Place the metal sheet with the secured print in the heat press set to 350°F for 5 minutes. The side with the print should be on top.

For even heat distribution, put a sheet of parchment paper between the print and the heat press as shown below.

Step 6. Use protective gloves to remove the print and metal sheet then cool

When the 5 minutes are up, put on your protective gloves and let the metal sheet cool down for at least 30 minutes.

Step 7. Gently Peel off the print

Once cool, gently peel off the print.

Step 8. Add final coating (Optional)

If you like, you can add a polymer coating to boost the longevity of your design or give it a unique matte or satin finish. Experiment with different styles!

How to Print Photos on Curved Metal Surfaces

We have covered how to print on metal sheets. But what about how to print on metal water bottles, mugs, or tumblers, since these are curved surfaces? You can still print on a metal item that is curved or cylindrical!

The two main differences between printing on flat metal sheets and cylindrical, metal containers will be switching from a Tumbler Heat Press Machine instead of a Flatbed Heat Press Machine, and we will use adhesive sublimation transfer stickers instead of printing out a design.

Using the example of a stainless steel water bottle, here is how to print on curved metal surfaces:

  1. Clean the bottle: Remove any debris on the bottle’s surface. You can wash it as you normally would, then dry it with a lint-free cloth.

  2. Wrap the sublimation transfer stickers around the bottle: With the designs touching the surface of the bottle, wrap the sticker or stickers around the bottle and secure it with heat-resistant tape.

  1. Place the bottle in the Tumbler Heat Press: Set the Tumbler Heat Press at 356°F for 90 seconds then turn it around and return it for 30 seconds.

  2. Use protective gloves to remove the bottle: Once done, remove the bottle from the Tumbler Heat Press.

  3. Allow the bottle to cool: Leave the bottle with the stickers still attached for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Gently Peel off the print: Once the 30 minutes are done, gently peel off the stickers to reveal your beautiful designs!
